When Hamburg was relegated in 2018, the clock stopped at the classic Volksparkstadion, marking that the club had never been relegated since the first season 55 years earlier.
But now they can start the clock again.
After defeating bottom team Ulm 6–1, it is now clear that Hamburg is back in the German top league, after repeatedly falling just short.
On four occasions, Hamburg finished fourth (the top two teams are promoted, the third team qualifies), and twice the team lost in the qualifying round.
After the final whistle, thousands of supporters stormed the pitch and began celebrating.
But now it is clear that HSV can finish at worst second and thus is back. With one round left to play, Hamburg leads the league and has a four-point lead over Elversberg in third place.
Hamburg has won the Bundesliga three times (1978–79, 1981–82, 1982–83) and the European Cup (now Champions League) once, in 1982–83.
