"A sad day for New Jersey and the tradition of trotting. Hambletonian and The Meadowlands have shared so much history - it's hard to imagine one without the other," writes stable owner Åke Svanstedt on X.
Star driver Svanstedt has been based in the USA for many years and has won the Hambletonian three times with horses he has trained himself.
This year's edition was decided on Saturday, and Swedish trainer Marcus Melander made it to the winner's circle after his Apex, with New Zealander Dexter Dunn in the saddle, took home the first prize of just over 9.5 million kronor.
The Hambletonian was first held in 1926. Harrah's Hoosier Park in Anderson, Indiana, will be the seventh track to host the race.
