Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announces that it has received the remains of a hostage.

"Israel has received, via the Red Cross, a coffin of a fallen hostage that has been handed over to the (Israeli army) IDF and (Israeli intelligence service) Shin Bet inside the Gaza Strip," the office wrote on Tuesday evening.

The remains will be examined by a coroner for identification, AFP reports.

According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the remains were handed over by the terrorist group Hamas.

On Monday, Israel returned the remains of 45 Palestinians.

Under the current ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on October 10, Hamas is to hand over the remains of a total of 28 hostages. So far, 20 have been handed over, including 18 Israelis, one Thai citizen and one Nepalese.

Israel, in turn, will hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for every dead Israeli that is returned.
