For Hamas, the management of the Gaza Strip is a closed chapter. Hamas will not participate at all in the transitional phase that is now beginning, which means that they have relinquished control over the area, but the organization remains a fundamental part of Palestinian society, the source told AFP, and wanted to remain anonymous in order to discuss sensitive issues.
The statement comes after a source told BBC that Hamas has recalled about 7,000 members from its security forces to regain control over areas in Gaza recently left by Israeli troops.
Hamas was also reported to have appointed five new governors, all with a military background, some of whom had previously led brigades within the organization's armed branch. BBC also referred to reports indicating that armed Hamas units have already been deployed to several districts, some in civilian clothes and others in blue uniforms from the Gaza police.
