Only two or three people know where the wanted Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is located, says an anonymous source within the Islamist movement to the Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.
This narrow circle is said to cater to Sinwar's needs and enable communication between him and the Hamas leadership in Qatar in connection with hostage negotiations.
The 61-year-old Sinwar – the terrorist-stamped movement's highest leader in Gaza and hunted by Israel, which sees him as most responsible for the attacks on October 7 – is believed to live in Gaza's underground tunnel system. In May, The New York Times reported that Sinwar was hiding in tunnels under the city of Khan Yunis.
According to Asharq al-Awsat's source in Hamas, whose statement is difficult to verify, Yahya Sinwar has so far escaped unscathed in the war.
