Hamas, the militant group, told AFP it was ready to hand over control of Gaza. At the same time, it is demanding that Israel open the Rafah border crossing as promised.

"Protocols have been prepared, documents have been organized and finalized, and a committee is in place to ensure a complete transfer of governance of all sectors of the Gaza Strip to the technocratic committee," said Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesman.

The technocratic government prepared to take over the area consists of 15 Palestinian technocrats who were appointed in connection with the ceasefire that took effect on October 10. Its task is to maintain daily operations in Gaza in the wake of the war, and the body is subordinate to Donald Trump's so-called peace council, of which the American president is chairman.

The leader of the new Palestinian government, Ali Shaath, a former senior figure within the Palestinian Authority, is expected to enter Gaza when the Rafah border crossing reopens.

Hazem Qassem said in an interview with AFP that the crossing - the only one that leads to the rest of the world and does not go through Israel - “must be opened in both directions, with full freedom of entry and exit to and from the Gaza Strip without Israeli obstacles.”

According to the ceasefire agreement, the crossing is to be opened.
