Around half a million undocumented migrants who have made a life for themselves in Spain will be allowed to stay, the government has announced.

A decree will guarantee that these people enjoy fundamental rights, in an adaptation to “the prevailing social reality”.

The numbers will probably be around half a million people, more or less, says Elma Saiz, the Spanish left-wing government's Minister of Migration and Integration, to RTVE .

It is said to include people who have lived in Spain for at least five months and who have applied for asylum in Spain before the turn of the year.

The conservative opposition party Partido Popular (PP) has come out against the initiative. The PP and the far-right party Vox believe it will encourage more migrants to seek refuge in Spain.
