Midfielder Carly Wickenheiser has left Swedish women's team Häcken. The Canadian is being sold to a team in the American league.

Carly Wickenheiser's time at Häcken on Hisingen lasted only one season. She scored five goals for the club that won the Swedish Championship last fall.

Her new club will be the North Carolina Courage.

"I will be forever grateful to the club for bringing me here and for all the work the coaches put in," she said in a statement.

Häcken did not want to sell the 28-year-old, but the American club exercised a buyout clause in her contract.

"That type of agreement carries an unfortunate uncertainty factor, and we as a club avoid such agreements where possible. In the future we will be even more restrictive," says football director Martin Ericsson.
