Häcken needed to defeat Larnaca and also win the match against Slovan Bratislava on December 18 to still have a chance to advance in the tournament.
The chance lasted a long time with the scoreboard tied at 0–0 a bit into the second half.
The deadlock would be broken, however, by the away team with just over 25 minutes left to play. Larnaca's Jorge Miramon found a ball in Häcken's penalty area and then, via Filip Helander, fired in the visitors' lead.
Häcken did not give up and equalized in the 94th minute through Johan Hammar. However, Hisingslaget never came closer than that.
Häcken is now 29th out of 36 teams in the league phase and cannot pass enough teams. To reach the playoff for the finals, they need to finish at worst 24th.
Larnaca are undefeated in the league phase of the Conference League, with two wins and three draws.
