"Gyökeres: 'Wanted to score an early goal'"

He scores goals for Sporting in the Portuguese league and in the Champions League. When Viktor Gyökeres came home to Stockholm, he didn't disappoint. He struck already in the third minute against Slovakia and showed the way to group victory in the Nations League.

On and off the national arena, little boys were running around and making his now world-famous goal celebration.

After the 2–1 win, he was as cool as usual. But he acknowledged that the early goal – in the third minute – really made him a little extra happy.

It's been a while since I scored a goal fairly early in a match. I told the others on the team that it would be fun to do it.

And so it happened, he says to Viaplay.

"You shouldn't think"

Alexander Isak made a quality pass in depth. Gyökeres pressed past a defender and slammed the ball into one corner.

It becomes easy when almost everything just flows. Gyökeres now goes into every match with a clear confidence in what he can do – and that others fear him.

That's how you try to feel when you go out on the pitch. It's easier to play your football then. You shouldn't think about how the opponent plays, but play your own game and have fun with the ones you play with.

Today, it was a fairly tough pitch, but we won the match and that was the most important thing.

The national team leaves the C-division and meets significantly stronger nations in the next edition of the Nations League in two years. In 2026, the World Championship will also be played in North America.

Now we'll see which teams we get in the World Cup qualifiers, says Gyökeres.

The draw takes place on December 13 and the qualifiers begin next year.

Now we've won the group in the Nations League, it's match again on Tuesday (Azerbaijan). Then the goal is to reach the World Championship 2026, says the striker.

Criticizes the lawn

Like many other players, he was disappointed with the poor pitch on the national arena Strawberry arena.

When it's an arena like this, so big and home ground for the Swedish national team, it feels pretty reasonable to have a better lawn than it looked today.

It doesn't hold a good level, says Gyökeres.

Dejan Kulusevski's grade:

No grade, but if everyone wants us to play better, then you have to help a little and give us a chance to play good football.
