Arsenal's 27-year-old Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres came on in the 61st minute for Kai Havertz and scored the decisive goal of the match in the 89th minute - his eleventh league goal during his debut season for the London club.
Gyökeres slotted the ball into an open net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford failed to clear a cross.
Max Dowman, also a substitute, then made it 2–0 for Arsenal in stoppage time after Pickford had headed an attacking corner as Everton sought an equaliser, making Dowman the youngest player to score in the Premier League.
Arsenal, who have not won the league since the 2003-2004 season, have played 31 of their 38 Premier League matches and lead the table by nine points over second-placed Manchester City, who have played one game fewer.
City dropped points away to bottom-placed West Ham (1–1) in Saturday night's late league match. This resulted in Arsenal extending their lead in the league.
