It was already in the 15th minute that the 26-year-old struck from over 20 meters. The finish with his right foot went low, just inside the post, and Braga goalkeeper Lukás Hornícek never made it down to his right post.
The goal was Viktor Gyökeres' 31st league goal in 27 matches, which is two more than what the Swede managed last season.
It looked for a long time like it would be the only goal of the match, but in the 87th minute Afonso Patrao equalized for the visitors and 1–1 became the final result.
The dropped points mean that Benfica now tops the Portuguese league on 68 points – two points ahead of the reigning champions Sporting Lissabon. Six matches remain in the league season.
