Viktor Gyökeres was active during his 65 minutes on the pitch for his new team from London, but never got any really good chances in front of goal. He had four scoring opportunities, but only one shot on goal.

In the first half, he collided with his teammate Gabriel and got an injury on the back of his head. Gyökeres was bandaged and continued playing with a black hairband around his head.

In the 65th minute, he was substituted for Leandro Trossard.

Six minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli was substituted in. After just a few seconds, he ran free and scored 1–0.

Martinelli then played forward to Trossard who scored 2–0.

Arsenal reached the semifinal in the spring, where they were defeated by Champions League winner Paris SG. Athletic Bilbao has not played in Champions League for eleven years.

In the other early match in the CL premiere, Belgian Union SG sensationally won, as in their very first match in Champions League, they away defeated PSV Eindhoven with 3–1.
