Hat-trick in the playoff semi-final against Ukraine on Thursday. Decisive goal against Poland at Strawberry Arena a few days later.

That was the goal that took Sweden to the World Cup.

"It's hard to put this into words. It was what everyone wanted; to do it on home soil is indescribable. We believed in it until the very end - that's why we're in the World Cup," he says.

Sweden had taken the lead twice, 1–0 (Anthony Elanga) and 2–1 (Gustaf Lagerbielke).

Poland equalized both times.

But when Gyökeres struck in the 88th minute after chaos in the Polish penalty area, it was the goal that carried them all the way to the World Cup in the United States.

Polish goalkeeper Kamil Grabara first saved a shot from Lucas Bergvall; Besfort Zeneli hit the post on the rebound before Gyökeres forced the ball into the net.

"You try to be connected and involved in the situations, to be present, and I felt that I was there at the end. It's hard to find words to describe how it felt after the goal," says Gyökeres, adding:

"I will remember that for a long time."

Sweden failed in the World Cup qualifiers last fall. Graham Potter was brought in for the final matches, and in the playoff game - the second chance thanks to the group victory in the Nations League - the results suddenly came.

So what happened?

"A positivity in the group, a team cohesion that is difficult to beat both on and off the field, and then we are good footballers. We showed that today and last Thursday too," says the Arsenal star.
