Anger has been sparked among Colombia's religious communities after President Gustavo Petro claimed Jesus "made love... perhaps with Mary Magdalene."

The leftist Colombian president and former guerrilla Gustavo Petro reflected on Jesus' private life during a speech on Tuesday.

A man like him cannot exist without love, Petro said, noting that Jesus was surrounded by "women who loved him - there were many - when he died."

The Evangelical Association of Colombia, which also represents Protestant congregations, reacted sharply: Petro's statement "distorts historical, biblical and theological truths."
