The leftist Colombian president and former guerrilla Gustavo Petro reflected on Jesus' private life during a speech on Tuesday.
A man like him cannot exist without love, Petro said, noting that Jesus was surrounded by "women who loved him - there were many - when he died."
The Evangelical Association of Colombia, which also represents Protestant congregations, reacted sharply: Petro's statement "distorts historical, biblical and theological truths."
