On Christmas Day, Aftonbladet revealed that Gustafsson was close to taking over as coach of the 2022 Swedish championship team.

Now the parties have reached an agreement.

The major part is about me following Häcken over the years, with respect, and always liking the playing style that Häcken drives. Actually, it fell very naturally when I looked homeward and Häcken was available, so it was an obvious choice for me, says Jens Gustafsson, who has signed a three-year contract.

Gustafsson replaces Pål Arne "Paco" Johansen, who was fired last autumn due to poor results and was replaced by Joop Oosterveld as temporary coach.

Häcken finished eighth in the men's Allsvenskan.

I believe there are things we need to get in place, if you look back at last year. Then I don't think you should look back too much. In the big picture, I believe there will be very little change in Häcken's way of presenting themselves on the football pitch, says Gustafsson.

The experienced Jens Gustafsson, who has been, among other things, the national team captain for the U21 team, comes most recently from Saudi Arabian al-Fateh, where he was fired at the beginning of December.

He has previously in his career coached Halmstad, IFK Norrköping, Hajduk Split, and Pogon Szczecin.
