"Wallander is a role that carries a legacy. It is an honor – and a responsibility – to step into this character that so many already have a relationship with. I look forward to exploring Wallander, both his darkness, but also his stubborn hope for justice", says Gustaf Skarsgård in a press release.
The three films are based on Henning Mankell's novels "Steget efter" (1997), "Villospår" (1995) and "Mördare utan ansikte" (1991). In the films, viewers will "once again meet a Wallander who struggles against both external crime and internal demons – in the midst of a society that is becoming increasingly complex", according to TV4.
As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that Gustaf Skarsgård previously played a younger version of Kurt Wallander in the film "Pyramiden" (2007).
The filming of the new Wallander films begins in Ystad after the summer, and the premiere is expected during 2026/2027. Molly Hartleb (first film) and Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja (second and third film) are directing.
Henning Mankell (1948–2015) wrote 12 novels about Kurt Wallander between 1991 and 2009, and there have been countless film adaptations – in both Swedish and English. Previously, among others, Rolf Lassgård, Krister Henriksson, and Kenneth Branagh have played the role of Wallander.
