Gulan Avci announced in January that after eight years as a member of parliament for the Liberals (L), she would not run for another term.
L's current opposition mayor in Stockholm, Jan Jönsson, has said, after the party's swing toward the Sweden Democrats (SD), that he will not run again. Since then, many members have contacted Gulan Avci and asked if she could take over, she says.
However, any collaboration with SD is not currently underway in the capital, according to Avci.
"If I were to be entrusted with leading the Liberals in Stockholm, I do not see it as an option in the leadership I would offer our members and our party," she says.
