A total of 21 people have been killed and 145 injured, including several children, in the 121 attacks carried out during the first five months of the year.

The increase in attacks by criminal groups, which are involved in cocaine smuggling and illegal gold mining, among other things, is 146 percent, according to Iris Marín, the country's national rights ombudsman.

The attacks come as Colombia, which is responsible for the world's largest cocaine production, struggles with the worst violence in a decade.

According to Marín, the guerrillas also use drones for surveillance, intimidation and territorial control.
