Phil the groundhog is said to know what the weather will be like. Now it's time for the rodent from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to make his forecast.

Groundhog, groundhog. Or, for those who speak groundhog slang, it's either another six weeks of winter or an early spring. The phenomenon: Phil has been predicting the weather since the late 1800s. The weather-seeking rodent's popularity skyrocketed after the 1993 film "Groundhog Day."

According to tradition, spring is near if Phil doesn't see his own shadow when he emerges from his burrow at dawn. However, if he sees his shadow and returns to his burrow, another six weeks of winter await.

Phil formally conveys his prediction to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, who wears a black top hat and then announces the forecast to the people gathered at Gobbler's Knob.
