"Circus" is part of a suite of three paintings from 1917–1918 that hung in the dining room of the Grünewald couple's villa in Saltsjöbaden. The other works "Apache Dance", which is privately owned, and "Bullfighting", which is owned by the Norrköping Art Museum, also have motifs taken from the circus ring, writes the auction house Bukowskis in a press release.
"Cirkus" was owned by the Grünewald family before it was first sold at auction in 1997.
