Ukraine wants to use EU support to buy the Swedish Gripen fighter jet, Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) said after meeting his new Ukrainian colleague Mykhailo Fedorov on the sidelines of the EU defense ministers' meeting.

Through the 90 billion euros that we have been able to secure, Ukraine will also want to use some of those funds to start financing Gripen fighters and the construction of a stronger air defense, Jonson said.

The EU has previously decided to lend 90 billion euros to Ukraine, a large part of which may be used for weapons purchases.

Jonson could not say when it may be relevant for Ukraine to buy Gripen.

We are working on it continuously and have a very intensive dialogue with Ukraine, he said.

We are also talking to other countries about joining in and providing some funding. We are in an intensive phase.
