About 150 women had gathered in a house in the town of Kuhestak on Tuesday evening to attend a wedding when the explosion occurred, local residents told the AP news agency.
Images verified by international media show the destruction shortly after: twisted metal structures, rubble and debris strewn across the floor, and bloody shoes.
Ali Mallahi, the bride's cousin, points to a large gaping hole in the ceiling of the room that was directly hit by a projectile. Dinner was supposed to be served there, but the celebrations had only just started and the wedding couple had not yet arrived, he says.
The male guests had gathered in another building about 50 meters away.
Thank God there were no more victims, says Ali Mallahi.
“Terrible sight”
Two children and two women were killed instantly. Another woman - among the more than 60 injured - later died in hospital.
Neighbor Sasan Zarei says she rushed to the Mallahi family's home after the attack to help the victims.
"Most of the injured were children. It was a terrible sight," she told the AP.
Several explosions shook Kuhestak during the attack, residents said. A telecommunications tower in Kuhestak's harbour, about 100 meters from the wedding, was also hit.
During the same period, the US carried out bombing raids in southern Iran, which, according to the US military, were aimed at air defenses, radar systems and maritime infrastructure.
Traces of glide bombs
Iranian state media has shown images of what are said to be weapon remains from the site. Local residents have also shown the metal fragments, writes AP.
Both the BBC and the AP have had weapons experts analyse the images. Their assessment is that they come from a type of bomb used by the US military. The images show both remnants of JSOW and GBU-39, two types of precision-guided glide bombs, one of the American experts tells the AP.
However, the news agency has not been able to verify where the weapon remains were collected and whether they come from the wedding site.
US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that the US is investigating the attack.
Kuhestak is only about thirty kilometers from the town of Minab, where over 100 civilians - most of them children - were killed in an attack on a school on February 28, the day the US and Israel started their war against Iran.
