An international relief convoy will land in Cuba in March, organizers say. The initiative is backed by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

The convoy, named "Nuestra América Convoy to Cuba", says on its website that its goal is to deliver emergency aid to Cuba by air, land and sea.

"The Trump administration is strangling the island by stopping fuel, flights and essential supplies needed to survive," says the organization of which Greta Thunberg is a member.

The Swedish activist said in a statement that she supports the convoy to provide aid to the Cuban people and to stand up against "imperialists like Trump and Netanyahu." It is not clear whether she will go to Cuba, AFP reports.

Cuba is experiencing its worst period of fuel shortages and repeated power outages in years. Since Washington has sought to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the communist-ruled island has lost its main supplier of oil. Donald Trump has since threatened punitive tariffs on all countries that supply oil to Cuba.
