Meloni – who recently met with the US's incoming president Donald Trump in Florida – believes that his statements about the need to take over Greenland should be seen as "a message to other global players".

I feel that I can rule out that the US will attempt to annex areas that interest them by force in the coming years, says Meloni at a press conference in Rome, according to the news agency AFP.

The EU's foreign minister Kaja Kallas emphasizes at the same time that Greenland's "territorial integrity and sovereignty" must be respected.

Greenland is part of Denmark, says Kallas on her way into a NATO meeting in Germany.

Kallas has spoken with Denmark's prime minister Mette Frederiksen about Trump's statements.

She said that it's good that the incoming president is interested in the Arctic, which is a very important region, says the foreign minister according to AFP.
