Greenlandic women to receive compensation over forced IUD scandal

A large majority voted in favor of the compensation, which corresponds to 444,000 Swedish kronor.

Thank you for the broad support. It means a lot to Greenlandic women and to Greenlandic society, said Member of Parliament Naaja Nathanielsen from the Greenlandic party IA.

For more than 30 years, until 1991, the programme was in place, meaning that women had spirals inserted without their consent or knowledge.

Last year, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officially apologised at a ceremony in the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk.

The Greenlandic government has asked experts to investigate whether the Danish state has committed genocide. Two reports will be presented on Friday.
