Greenlandic Women to Receive Compensation for Forced Coil Insertions

Greenlandic women who without consent had a spiral inserted can receive economic compensation, writes Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen ahead of this week's formal apology for the interventions.

How large the compensation can be, Frederiksen does not announce in the press release that has been sent out, but last year Greenland gave 15 women a compensation of 300,000 Danish kronor each.

Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen will at a ceremony on Wednesday formally apologize for the spiral coercion.

Denmark's government initiated in 2022 an investigation into the forced use of the hormone spiral on thousands of women in Greenland from the mid-1960s until 1991, when Greenland took over the responsibility for healthcare.

During the visit to Greenland, Frederiksen will discuss the forms for the so-called reconciliation fund that will be established for the benefit of the affected women and "other Greenlanders who have been exposed to betrayal and systematic disparate treatment because they are Greenlanders".

"We cannot change what has happened, but we can take responsibility for it and create conditions for reconciliation", writes Frederiksen.
