The details of the agreement are still unknown, but a crucial aspect for Denmark and Greenland is continued Danish sovereignty and the Greenlandic population's right to self-determination, according to Danmarks Radio's political commentator Jens Ringberg.
"For Copenhagen – and Nuuk – it is crucial that Trump now signs off on not taking over Greenland. Instead, the three parties should cooperate on security in the Arctic. That goal is common," writes Ringberg.
Recognition of Greenland
Greenland's Foreign Minister, Múte B Egede, says the agreement reflects what they have demanded in negotiations with the US from the start.
Greenland's self-determination is recognised and the Greenlandic population is recognised in line with international law, the former head of government tells DR.
Among the Greenlandic population, President Donald Trump's repeated threats to take over the island are fresh in their minds:
"We might be able to negotiate a little. But he (Trump) won't get more than that. Farewell USA from me," a Nuuk resident tells the radio.
Should also apply to independent Greenland
From the American side, they emphasise above all what a great success the agreement is considered to be.
"This historic agreement is a huge win for the United States and all Americans," Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News.
Greenland will forever be part of North America's strategic defence area, excluding all (our) adversaries from the island and its surroundings. This agreement solves our national security issues in Greenland once and for all.
At the same time, the channel reports, citing US government sources, that the agreement has been designed in such a way that it will still apply even if Greenland, which is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, becomes an independent country in the future.
