That is the absolute first thing the next government needs to do in this area, spokesman Daniel Helldén said at a press conference.

This means expanding the routes - with Jönköping as a hub - toward Borås and Gothenburg in the west, toward Linköping and Stockholm in the north and south toward Hässleholm and Malmö.

This is how we further connect Sweden and reduce emissions from the transport sector, Helldén said.

According to Helldén, the upgrading and expansion of the railway must generally become a "generational project for a new government after the election."

MP also wants Sweden to have caught up with the maintenance backlog for the railway during the 2030s, something the Swedish Transport Administration expects may not happen until 2050.
