Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark has passed away at the age of 85 at a hospital in Athens, reports the Greek newspaper Kathimerini's news site.
He was, among other things, known as the author of several non-fiction books and biographies about various historical figures.
After his father's death when Prince Michael was only one year old, he grew up in Morocco and Spain and later studied in France.
As the grandson of the murdered King George I of Greece, Prince Michael was a member of the Greek royal house that ceased to exist when the country abolished the monarchy in 1973. His roots also extended to the Danish royal house, as his grandfather was the son of King Christian IX of Denmark.
Prince Michael was the only member of the Greek royal house who did not leave Greece after a failed counter-coup led by King Constantine I against the military junta in 1967.
