The oil tanker was heading to Novorossiysk, Russia, and was scheduled to sail on to Istanbul when it was hit by what is suspected to be a drone or other unmanned device. The ship, chartered by U.S. oil company Chevron, suffered material damage but was assessed to be still seaworthy. None of the 24 crew members were injured.
Greek Maritime Minister Vassilis Kikilias told state broadcaster ERT that Athens will lodge a strong protest against the country it believes is behind the suspected attack.
Kikilias also said he believes the attack may be related to the United States temporarily easing some sanctions on Russian oil shipments because of the war in Iran.
Kikilias also pointed to Ukraine as a country that regularly carries out attacks in the Black Sea.
