Kasidiaris, the former spokesperson and public face of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, was welcomed out of prison by supporters waving Greek flags.

The 45-year-old was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2020 after an Athens court ruled that Golden Dawn was a criminal organisation that had attacked migrants and left-wing activists. That same year, he founded a new party, Hellenes.

Even while in prison, Kasidiaris has continued to be politically active on social media. In July, Elon Musk, who has recently shown support for several far-right groups, said that Kasidiaris' imprisonment was "absolutely sick."

Greece is holding parliamentary elections next summer. On paper, however, Kasidiaris is banned from running until 2033.
