Greece abolished the monarchy in a referendum in 1974. The former royal family was stripped of their citizenship in 1994, in connection with their royal properties being transferred to state control.

It was on Friday that the government announced that ten members of the former royal family would be granted citizenship. Among these are five children of the late King Constantine II and the former Queen Anne-Marie, as well as five of their grandchildren.

"It is with deep emotion that we regain our Greek citizenship. The law from 1994 deprived us of our citizenship and made us stateless, with all the great emotional suffering that entails," says the former royal family in a statement.

The Greek royal family fled their homeland after a military junta seized power in April 1967. The military junta abolished the monarchy in Greece, a decision that was confirmed in a referendum in 1974, and the state took over the royal family's movable and immovable property.

Queen Anne-Marie is the sister of Denmark's Queen Margrethe and cousin to King Carl XVI Gustaf. She and her late husband Constantine moved back to Greece in 2013.
