According to Mitsotakis, they will be "among the largest protected marine areas in the entire Mediterranean".

Among other things, bottom trawling will be prohibited in the new marine reserves, the Prime Minister also promised that bottom trawling will be prohibited in all of Greece's marine areas by 2030 at the latest. This would make Greece the first country in Europe to make such a decision.

Mitsotakis said that he at the UN's Ocean Conference in France last month "made a promise to honor (Greece's) unique marine heritage" and "to protect it for future generations".

"Today, I fulfill this promise by establishing two new marine national parks, because when we protect our seas, we protect our own future", said Mitsotakis.
