The two were arrested on Tuesday due to the boy's disappearance in the summer of 2023. He was found dead last year, in an area not far from their home.

After 17 hours of questioning today, the detention was lifted, said the grandmother's lawyer Isabelle Colombani when she left the police station in Marseille late on Wednesday.

The investigators have done their job. We can see that an enormous amount of work has been done, she says and adds that her client has answered all questions.

Two of the grandparents' adult children, who were also detained, have been released without charge, according to BFMTV.

They were taken into custody based on all collected evidence, but the charges are not sufficient to lead to any prosecution in this case, says prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon at a press conference.

Émile was last seen walking alone on a street in the town of Le Haut-Vernet in the French Alps on July 8, 2023. A massive search operation was launched, but he was not found dead until nine months later, less than two kilometers away.
