The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo will not open fully until the last quarter of 2025 due to "regional security issues", according to Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to the news agency AFP.

The enormous museum, which has been under construction for two decades, has been affected by repeated delays caused by everything from financial worries to the pandemic. Currently, only parts of GEM are open.

The museum, which was supposed to have opened fully at the beginning of July, is expected to attract up to five million visitors annually. GEM will, when completed, be the world's largest archaeological museum and will house Tutankhamun's gilded coffin and treasures.
