The 55 governors, through their association NGA, are collectively declining a meeting with Trump, who did not invite Democratic governors.
The Democrats thus boycotted a later dinner at the White House, after which the NGA announced that the meeting with Trump was canceled, saying their "task is to represent all governors."
"We cannot allow a divisive act to achieve its goal," NGA CEO Brandon Tatum wrote in a statement, urging all politicians to work together for the good of the people.
In addition to the 50 states of the United States, the NGA represents governors from Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
