According to Minister of Civil Affairs Erik Slottner (KD), greater transparency is needed in municipalities. He points out that many have questioned the appropriateness of politicians being appointed as auditors to audit themselves and their party colleagues.

The municipal auditors are appointed by the municipal council to audit the activities of the municipality's committees and companies. They may, in turn, hire professional accountants as assistants.

The investigation is also tasked with proposing how the principle of public access can be introduced at the municipalities' cooperative organization SKR, Sweden's municipalities and regions.

Slottner says that SKR handles large amounts of tax funds while there is no possibility for transparency.

The assignment is to be reported on December 31, 2027.
