The Coast Guard will be tasked during today's government meeting to prepare for an armament of the agency, the TV channel reports. The purpose is to be able to protect personnel and in crisis situations cooperate better with the military.
It may involve such things as fixed weapon platforms and heavier reinforcement weapons for personnel, according to the Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M). Today, personnel have service weapons in the form of pistols.
It is the security situation that prompts this. We see that it is necessary with a reinforced armament to be able to handle threats from, for example, drones, but also other types of threats, he says to the TV channel.
The proposal is to be completed at the beginning of next year.
