"The purpose of the change is to allow women to take their medication home and have the abortion in a calm and safe environment, perhaps with the support of a friend or relative," says Minister of Health Elisabet Lann (KD) in a press release.
Treatment should continue to take place after a medical assessment, according to legal advice.
In the Tidö Agreement, SD, M, KD and L agreed to make abortion possible at home. The law is proposed to come into force on 1 January 2027.
Facts: Medical and surgical abortion methods
Medical abortion involves using medication and is done in two stages. First, a hormone-blocking agent is taken at a clinic or hospital. After 1–3 days, a drug that induces contractions is taken. The second drug can be taken at home. If you are past week 12 of pregnancy, the medical abortion is completed at an abortion clinic.
Surgical abortion is an operation that takes place in a clinic. It can be used up to and including weeks 12–13 of pregnancy; before week 7, the risk of incomplete abortion increases.
