"The aim is to keep down the costs of households' purchases of particularly necessary food," the government writes in a press release.
The inquiry was appointed after the government temporarily halved the food VAT until Dec. 31, 2027, as a support measure.
The investigator will delimit and define different categories of food in order to differentiate VAT, the government writes, and also submit a proposal for how differentiated VAT on food can be introduced.
The government has appointed Councillor Ann Linders as investigator and the assignment is to be reported on Dec. 22, 2026.
