Sweden Extends Internal Border Controls for Six Months Amid Security Threats

Internal border controls will be extended from November 12 because there is a “serious threat to public order and internal security,” the government says.

The government's assessment is based primarily on the "serious security situation that exists as a result of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine", which has led to hybrid threats and hostile actors within the Schengen area.

"Russia's full-scale invasion and ongoing aggression against Ukraine mean that we are in a serious security situation. This includes an increased threat of sabotage against Sweden and other EU member states, as the Security Service recently informed us," says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a comment.

Strömmer says it is important for the authorities to have access to the tools they need to counter this threat.

"Reinstated border controls provide important tools," he says.

The decision is valid for six months and comes into force on November 12, when the previous decision expires.
