A protest leader has been charged with terrorism over the unrest.

Farmers, miners, teachers, other professional groups, and indigenous peoples have led the protests, which have been ongoing for several weeks. The protests have demanded wage increases, economic stability, and an end to the privatization of state-owned companies.
