In the 2022 election campaign, M leader Ulf Kristersson promised that a four-track railway on the route would begin construction during his term. Now the government has given the green light for the planning proposal from the Swedish Transport Administration.
In addition to four tracks to Uppsala, the project also includes "signal optimization" on parts of the route and capacity enhancements on the E4. The aim is to increase access to Arlanda.
The government is also allocating one billion to begin planning the controversial Eastern Connection road project - a road and rail tunnel that will connect the northern and southern parts of the Stockholm region.
The goal is for the project to be so well-studied that an assessment of the traffic tunnel can be made before the next planning period.
