The people of Gothenburg themselves were allowed to come up with name suggestions and the result was clear: most people want the festival's old name back.
"We agree, Göteborgskalaset is the best name. Many cities have a festival, but here we have a party and it is part of our identity," says project manager Anna Mjörnvik in a press release.
In 2026, the festival will receive a larger budget and take place in more areas in the city. The stage at Kungstorget will remain, but the largest concerts will once again be played at Götaplatsen, which has not been used since 2018 for budgetary reasons.
Over 2,600 name suggestions were submitted, some of which alluded to classic Gothenburg phenomena such as the confusion surrounding new and old Ullevi.
“We actually received some suggestions for 'New Old Gothenburg Festival', and several other suggestions that show that we in Gothenburg still have a love for puns and witty names, such as Glennivalen, Ada & Kalaset and Festlänken,” says Anna Mjörnvik.
