The art museum at Götaplatsen in Gothenburg is to be renovated and expanded, which is expected to be more expensive than previously estimated. The cost will be 1.05–1.12 billion, with an annual rent of 61–66 million, compared with today's 10 million.

The city council approved the increased investment cost and also a higher rent on Thursday evening.

"The project, which is one of the city's largest cultural policy investments, can therefore continue as planned," the press release says.

The Cultural Administration estimates that the number of visitors will double from 250,000 per year to 500,000.

Gothenburg Art Museum will be closed for renovation between 2028 and 2032.
