Steorn has been museum director at the Gothenburg Art Museum since 2020 and was previously a curator at the Thielska Galleriet Foundation.
He will take up his new position on October 1.
"SHM is about to develop the museums' profiles and public offerings, and I am convinced Patrik will both contribute to and lead that work well," says Magnus Hagberg, superintendent at the State Historical Museums, in a press release.
