Ten million people within just over 15 miles from the earthquake's center in February 2023 could have received the highest warning level from Google to their mobile phones. Instead, only 469 warnings were sent out to take action at the first earthquake, according to Google for BBC.

The warning works on Android devices, which make up over 70 percent of Turkey's mobile phones. The system can detect shaking from a large number of mobile phones, after which a warning with a high alarm can be sent out. The alarm is intended to be issued for shaking that can pose a threat to human life.

Over 50,000 people perished in the earthquake in February 2023.
