Running AI operations requires huge data centres, and correspondingly large amounts of electricity. In its press release, Google emphasizes that it is also investing resources in the energy sector. Collaborations with Fortum, among others, will secure long-term electricity from nuclear power, new wind power and battery storage.
According to Google, this will contribute to "lower overall system costs throughout Finland and the Nordic region."
New data centres are to be built in Kajaani, Vaala and Muhos in central Finland. At the same time, the centre in Hamina is being expanded, a few kilometres from the Russian border in the southeast.
