The certificates - which apply to steel volumes of up to 91,000 tons in the first year - help increase the global supply of steel with near-zero emissions, so-called green steel, according to the company.

The parties also agree that new volumes can be added during the contract period.

The certificates allow Google to manage emissions related to steel in its own operations, including when building data centres.

The purchases also contribute to increased cash flow for Stegra and help the steel producer finance the expansion of production in Boden.

Stegra, with chairman Leif Johansson, is owned by a consortium that includes the Wallenberg sphere, among others.
